Beautiful nails always make a good impression. They look neat and tidy and have a lovely sheen. But taking good care of your nails isn't always easy on a day-to-day basis. You're using your hands all the time, after all, so it's easy for a nail to break. Perhaps you care for them diligently, but they just don't want to grow. In that case, false nails make a great alternative. They give you the look you want in an instant. Not only do you get that extra length, they also don't tear and are less likely to break. Then there's the fact that you can simply replace them if you like. False nails keep your hands looking great. Here's how to get the perfect nail look.
Applying false nails yourself
With false nails, you can beautify your hands in just a few minutes. They're easy to apply, given decent instructions and a bit of practice. Here's how to apply your new nails like a pro, in seven steps:
- Clean your natural nails; completely remove any traces of old nail polish with a nail polish remover. Carefully push back the cuticles.
- Take it one nail at a time: nail glue dries quickly. Trying to save time by doing all of your nails at once will result in a messy finish.
- Apply a fine layer of nail glue onto your natural nail, coating the entire nail with it.
- Now apply nail glue to the false nail. Only apply the adhesive to the false nail where it will rest on the real nail: if the false nail is longer than your own nail, leave the tip free of glue.
- Let the nail glue dry briefly.
- Attach the false nail to the real one by pressing down firmly for around 30 seconds. Don't press so hard that it hurts.
- Finally, wipe off any excess glue around the edges with a cosmetic pad and some nail polish remover, very carefully so you don't inadvertently loosen the nail.
Filing and decorating false nails
False nails usually come in pale nude shades, so for a really natural look, just add some clear nail varnish. Alternatively, you can make false nails your own by treating them like real ones. Use a nail file to shorten them and shape the tip. You can also apply nail polish to false nails in the usual way, or add tiny decorations with nail stickers. Why not get creative?
Applying gel nails yourself
Besides false nails to glue on, you can also buy DIY gel nail sets. These contain a special gel (different to a gel nail polish) and a UV lamp. Apply the gel to your real nails, but do it carefully – you want a smooth, flawless surface. A steady hand is a must when applying gel nails. Once the gel has been applied, it needs to be hardened with ultraviolet light. You can give your nails a natural, healthy look with DIY gel sets; in fact, they can make your real nails stronger. You can't add length this way, though: you can only do that with false nails or getting them done at a professional nail salon.

FAQs
How long do false nails last?
False nails last about 2–3 weeks. To make them last as long as possible, clean your nails thoroughly before applying the fake set and use a high-quality nail glue. Be sure to groom your false nails regularly, just as you would your real ones. File them down if they crack or chip.
How do I remove false nails?
It's not difficult to remove your false nails. Soak a cosmetic pad with plenty of nail polish remover and rub it over the nail for a little while; this will dissolve the glue. You can then remove the false nail with ease. This method is gentle, and so much better than picking at the false nail until it comes off. You should avoid doing this at all costs, as you can damage your own nails in the process.
What's the difference between acrylic, gel and false nails?
Acrylic nails are sculpted at nail salons. You can also get gel nails done there: a gel is applied to your own nails and hardened with UV light. Acrylic and gel nails are very robust, but they're not especially cheap. Even if you go off the look, it takes time to grow them out. That's not the case with fake nails that you glue on yourself: you can take these off or replace them at any time, so they're the flexible option.
