1. Priming

To make sure your eye makeup keeps you looking radiant all day long, it needs a good base. This is no different for the eyes than for the rest of the face. First, prime your skin. To do this, apply some skincare that moisturises and smooths your skin. This creates the perfect canvas for your makeup. An eye primer helps your eyeshadow to last the course, and applying primer also prevents smudging.

2. Eyeshadows 

Eyeshadow helps you contour your eyes. Eyeshadow sets with multiple shades often come with sculpting instructions: where to place which shade. Nude shades are popular for daytime. At night, dark colours can create an exciting look. Or add colour accents to match your outfit. Incidentally, contrasting shades emphasise your natural eye colour especially beautifully. That means blue eyes look even more sparkling paired with golden tones, while purplish shades make green eyes pop and brown eyes look amazing with a cool pink.

3. Eyeliner

A perfect eyeliner flick is an art in itself and gives eyes a special intensity. There are two kinds of eyeliner. A kajal eyeliner pencil is used for creating soft lines that can be corrected; for a smokey eye effect, apply it under your eyeshadow and blend. Liquid eyeliners provide clear definition, and are applied over your eyeshadow. They require a steady hand, however. Tip: rest your elbow on a hard surface and sweep the line outwards across the top of your eye.

4. Eyebrow makeup

Brows give your face expression, so it's important to pay attention to them when applying your makeup. There is a huge range of different products to help you. Brow powder is used to create a subtle fullness and contour the brows. Brow pencils fill in gaps to create an even look. It often makes sense to combine pencil and powder. Brow gels then keep the hairs in line and fix everything in place. As a rule of thumb, for a natural look, choose brow products no more than one shade darker than your natural brow colour.  

5. Mascara

Mascara thickens lashes, creates length and gives your eyes greater intensity. Mascara also makes your eyes look instantly more awake and defined. Important: when applying mascara, place the wand at the edge of your lashes and make gentle zigzag movements while bringing the wand upwards. This separates the individual lashes and gives them a gorgeous curl.

How can you make sure your eye makeup stays on for longer?

Eye makeup should ideally stay put all day. One way to achieve this is by priming your skin beforehand; You can do this using foundation. There are also special neutral-coloured eye primers that make colours look particularly intense. To be on the safe side, you can also fix your eye makeup with a setting spray afterwards.

How do I remove eye makeup?

Eye makeup removers will even remove waterproof mascaras and eyeliners. They are oil-based and are effective at removing even long-lasting products. Add a few drops of makeup remover to a cosmetic pad and sweep it over your eyes. Make sure to get into every corner and wipe the pad underneath your lashes too, so you can be sure you've removed all traces of mascara to avoid ending up with panda eyes.

Why is my eyeliner smudging?

Read these five tips to keep your eyeliner in place and avoid smudging: 

1. Use a light eye cream and don't spread it too close to the edge of your eyelids.
2. Prime your skin with an eye primer or concealer.
3. Loose powder absorbs excess oil like blotting paper. Using a large brush, gently dust the setting powder everywhere you've applied makeup.
4. We often unconsciously touch our face, especially if the air is dry or our eyes are irritated – so hands off!
5. Use a waterproof eyeliner, as this won't smudge as much.
