Scents
No other accessory stirs emotions in quite like women's or men's fragrance. They can radiate harmony or help you make an exciting impression. The choices are endless. Fragrances are sometimes light and sometimes opulent. They can add fresh, floral accents or leave a powder-soft note. On the one hand, this is due to the endless possibilities of combining nuances. On the other hand, the same fragrance is unique on each person wearing it. And why is that? A quick look at the fragrance pyramid reveals all.
The fragrance pyramid
You put on a perfume, but when you smell it again a few minutes later, it suddenly seems completely different. Does that sound familiar? In an Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette different fragrance notes gradually take centre stage. Perfumers go to great lengths to create what is known as the fragrance pyramid. It consists of a top note, a heart note and a base note, each of which is characterised by different perfume oils. One of them is responsible for the fact that fragrances develop a very individual note on each individual.
The top note
The top note of a women's or men's perfume is the beginning of the fragrance experience. Like the intro to a song, it sets the mood. Fresh fragrances exude spicy or citrusy nuances. Floral perfumes command attention in the first moments with a particularly lively bouquet. This first impression introduces the fragrance. But the nuances that dominate here evaporate within a few minutes.
The heart note
When the top note fades, you get to know the actual character of the fragrance. The heart note forms the core of every perfume. Here, the focus is on fragrances that give contour and warmth. They are noticeable around 5 minutes after application. Sometimes you might like a fragrance at the beginning, but in the second phase it fades a bit. Or you find the first impression a bit overwhelming, but are then thrilled by the heart note. So you can only know then whether or not the fragrance really suits you.
The base note
While you're still enjoying the heart note, the base note slowly emerges. At first it is emerges only very slightly, but eventually it will shape the entire perception of the fragrance. Here perfumers use mainly warm and woody aromas. Typical for this are, for example, sandalwood, musk and vanilla. And it is precisely these nuances that develop a very individual character in combination with your skin. They ensure that a fragrance is one-of-a-kind on you. This phase will stay with you for hours.

FAQs
What types of fragrances are there?
Fragrances can be divided into eau de parfum, eau de toilette and body mists. The difference here lies in the amount of fragrance oils that the product contains. The highest quality are eau de parfums. They are by far the top performer with 15-30% fragrance oils. Because of this these perfumes last particularly long and smell very intense. In second place is the eau de toilette with 6-9% fragrance oils. Their effect is a little more subtle. However, you can change that by applying more of the product. A body mist gives you an even lighter aroma than an eau de toilette. Here you really experience just a delicate hint of fragrance.
Where should I apply a fragrance?
The placement has a great influence on the effect of a fragrance. In some places you may not notice much of an effect. In other places, however, you will appreciate the scent extremely intensely. The best places for this are places where you can feel your pulse. These are, for example, on the inside of the wrists, neck and temples. You can also apply perfume behind the earlobes or on the décolleté. A mist, on the other hand, is so light that you simply spread it over your neck and décolleté with a few pumps.
How do I store fragrances properly?
If you store fragrances correctly, you can enjoy them for longer. Light, heat and evaporation are not good for the flighty products. You can protect them by storing fragrances as follows:
- Cool: Do not put fragrances in the fridge, but store them at a low room temperature. So you should put them in a room that's not too warm, and far away from heaters.
- Dark: An ideal place for scents is a windowless bathroom. In a daylit bathroom, perfumes belong in a cupboard.
- Closed: Put on the lid after each use. Make sure the bottle is tightly closed. And never leave perfumes and perfume sprays lying around in the open.
