Why are they called "boxers"?

As the name already reveals: The comfortable men's underpants have their origin in boxing. The first boxer shorts already existed in 1925. Their invention is due to the American Jacob Golomb: as founder of Everlast, an equipment company for boxers, he improved the design of the underpants. His goal was to give professional boxers more freedom of movement in the sport.

The elastic waistband of the boxer shorts keeps the underpants securely in place, prevents pressure points and at the same time allows for better "leg work". That's why today's underpants are called "boxers."

What's the button in the boxer shorts for?

"Classic" men's underpants have a front opening. This gives an open slit in the crotch. The button was originally used to close it. This tradition continues to this day. That is why there is a button or even two buttons at the front of the men's boxer shorts. Some models also have a concealed button placket, which gives the boxer shorts an elegant touch. Whether the buttons are closed or left open is up to the wearer.
