Who invented the bikini? 

The very first bikini was created by French designer Louis Réard. His family owned a lingerie business and he wanted some new inspiration for it after the war. He wanted to create swimwear that gave people a little light-heartedness again. But fabric was a scarce commodity. Luckily, he had a bright idea that required very little of it: the triangle bikini, and its design involved some cord holding four little triangles of fabric together. The result was an absolute scandal – and a phenomenal success. Soon after its launch, movie stars took to the triangle bikini, and it's still in great demand today.

How should I wash my bikini bottoms?

Bikinis are usually made from synthetic material, which helps them stretch and dry quickly. They can lose their elasticity as a result of too much salt and chlorine. Bacteria can also gather in the material, leading to unpleasant odours. So your cleaning routine should go as follows:

• After every swim: rinse the bikini with clean water.
• After your holiday if you can't wash while you're away: use a mild colour-fast detergent, and wash by hand or in the machine at a maximum of 30°C without spin cycle.
