Weddings are truly one of the best events and an important moment in life to celebrate, both for the bridal couple and for all their guests. Each bridal couple is unique, and so is every wedding. This means that as a wedding guest, there are just as many different types of clothes you can choose to wear. Regardless of whether you’re attending a small wedding for the couple’s nearest and dearest, a beach wedding at sunset or no holds barred fairytale wedding, there is a look that is spot on – both when it comes to your personal style and what works well for the bridal couple’s big day. Here we’ve gathered style inspiration for different types of weddings with everything from classic dresses to modern outfits and wedding themes.

LONG DRESSES FOR WEDDINGS

Lots of people choose to wear a dress to a wedding, either as a guest or as a bridesmaid. The dress is a classic party garment that helps put you in the party mood. Long dresses in elegant fabrics are particularly popular, as they usually aren’t something you wear every day. A long dress for a wedding is traditionally associated with the white tie, black tie or cocktail attire dress codes, which we’ve covered in more depth in other articles. Your dress can be fitted, flowy or a gown with a puffy skirt, it just depends on your taste and what you think fits the occasion. When made out of a luxurious fabric such as silk or velvet, a simple long evening gown is transformed into a stunning dress any wedding guest would be proud to wear. Even beautiful dress features such as a low-cut back, bare shoulders and asymmetrical skirt bring and an extra-special touch to the wedding. Different types of breezy dresses in thin woven cotton, jersey or poplin are suitable for a more elegant wedding with traditional dress code and for summer weddings with a more relaxed dress code.

SUMMER CHIC DRESS CODE

For a summer wedding, it’s quite common for the bride and groom to specify the summer chic dress code on their invitations. This dress code is open to interpretation, but can generally be interpreted as meaning bright colours and patterns. It also means that you don’t have to stick to (or break) traditional dress codes – instead you can choose to wear a short dress, stylish jumpsuit, long skirt or trousers. Match your clothing to the sun in different shades of yellow, or choose colours that pop, such as bright neon pink, lime green and orange. For the summer chic dress code, go for dresses, skirts, trousers and suits in patterns such as floral, striped and spotted. Choose a maritime-inspired outfit, like a red-striped shirt with three-quarter sleeves and a white pleated midi skirt or a navy blue blouse along with white culottes. Wear a floral wreath in your hair, put a flower on your lapel or opt for statement jewellery in bold colours and shapes. It’s a midsummer night’s dream!

WHITE PARTY

Traditionally wedding guests should avoid wearing wear white, but modern dress codes such as the white party are becoming more and more common. This simply means that guests should dress completely in white. You can either wear a white dress or wear different dressy white separates for a full wedding ready look. Here, the perfect white shirt comes in handy and you can either match it with white suit trousers, a white long skirt or why not even a pair of fashionable, white shorts? Why not mix white garments made from different fabrics? For example, a white silk blouse with white cotton trousers, or a white suit with white round neck t-shirt underneath. At a white party, seize the opportunity to play with textures by using lace or ruffles, and garments with different volumes to create a dramatic and interesting look. A tight white lace top works wonderfully with wide palazzo pants and an off-shoulder blouse with puff sleeves looks fab with long fitted skirt.

FINDING COLOUR COMBINATIONS THAT WORK

No matter the season, there are loads of beautiful colour combinations that work for women’s wedding clothing. You can use different colour combinations as a theme when choosing accessories, shoes, a suit or dress to wear to the wedding. Red and pink is an amazing colour combination that naturally works well for weddings. If your dress is pink, you can match it with red shoes, a red handbag or red lips. You can also combine a red top with a pink skirt or trousers. White and gold is also winning combination, as are green and blue. Colour blocking with a blue dress and an oversized green scarf around the neck looks great, but you can also go for a more unified look by matching several shades of the same colour. This could be a light blue dress with dark blue shoes, or various shades of beige, nude and camel.

CLOTHING FOR WEDDINGS ON CHILLY DAYS

Unfortunately, weddings don’t only happen when it’s 20°C and sunny, but luckily there are lots of stylish outfits for wedding guests that fit the occasion even in cold weather. For example, you could opt for a long-sleeved dress in a warmer fabric such as velvet, wool or cashmere. If you can’t find a dress in these fabrics that suits your taste, then you can build your outfit using the layer-by-layer principle. A sleeveless or short-sleeved dress looks stunning over a long-sleeved t-shirt or tight polo neck jumper. Choose a sweater in a thinner, elegant material such as fine-knit wool. A fine-knit polo neck jumper will also look nice under a jacket or jumpsuit. You can also match your wedding outfit with a gorgeous shawl to drape over your shoulders or wear a short faux-fur jacket. Add a hat, a pair of gloves and elegant ankle boots to keep you warm and stylish all day.
