To really get rid of coffee stains on fabric, you must first soak the clothes, tablecloth, carpet or fabric. You can also use a number of products that are common to have at home. Check it out.

As with most food and beverage stains, do not tumble dry the textiles until the coffee stains are completely gone. The heat from the dryer can make the stains settle extra hard and make them virtually impossible to remove.

Since weak stains – whether they are coffee stains, chocolate stains, wine stains or grease stains – reappear and become stronger when the fabric dries, it is best to let the garment air dry the first time you wash it, to be on the safe side. Air drying will not cause the stain to harden, which means you can continue to wash the coffee stain if it did not disappear on the first try.

Remove coffee stains

Removing coffee stains can be a simple one step process, or a slightly more laborious procedure in several steps. It is best to start with the simplest solution – namely to rinse the coffee stain in cold water. Sometimes it's enough, especially if it's a new coffee stain. But if that doesn't work, move on to the next step.

Working quickly before the stain dries can be crucial in how easy it is to remove the coffee stain. A wet coffee stain is much easier to wash off than a dried coffee stain. But if you are in a restaurant or at work and do not like to undress on the spot, it is good if you can sprinkle salt on the stain and dab on it with cold water or mineral water.

What you need to get rid of coffee stains:

  • Liquid detergent
  • Dish soap (optional)
  • Detergent in powder form
  • Vinegar
  • Stain remover
  • Toothbrush

Rinse with cold water

If it is a fresh coffee stain, rinse the stain from the back with cold water. In this way you prevent the coffee from flowing through the fabric that is still clean. Rinse with cold water for ten to fifteen minutes, or until the water coming out on the other side is completely clear. If the stain is still there, or if it is an old coffee stain, proceed to the next step.

Rub with liquid detergent

Gently rub liquid detergent and cold water into the coffee stain. Leave the detergent on the stain for about five minutes, but be careful not to let the detergent dry. If it is an old coffee stain, you must leave the garment soaked in cold water after you have treated the stain with detergent. Every five minutes, pick up the garment and gently rub a little on the stain to loosen the coffee from the fabric. After about 30 minutes in cold water, it is time to rinse off the detergent thoroughly.

Pre-treat and wash

Treat the coffee stain with stain remover. Be sure to apply the remover on both sides of the stain so that the agent really penetrates the fabric. Leave for about five minutes, then wash according to the instructions on the washing label.

Inspect and dry

Check that the coffee stain is completely gone before you put the garment or fabric in the dryer. If the stain is still there, repeat the steps before allowing the fabric to dry. Air-dry the clothes, carpet or tablecloth the first time you wash them, as some stains reappear when the fabric has dried. As long as you do not tumble dry the garment or fabric, you can repeat the steps as many times as you like until you have managed to remove the coffee stain.
